Where on a slot machine do I need to look to determine the bet amount?
Is tthere some place obvious I have to look to determine the bet amount for a slot machine or do I have to just look at the little screen where I put the money in?

It usually clearly written on the machine. Of course, that’s not the whole answer. A 1c machine does not necessarily cost 1c per spin. Usually there are options for covering more than one win line at a cost of one credit per line. Then there is often an option to bet multiple credits per win line. So it is not uncommon for a 1c machine to cost over a dollar a spin if you play maximum credits.
If you are beginner you might want to consider a nice simple 25c machine with two or three win lines. This makes is 50c or 75c per spin, and it easy to figure out.
The bottom line is that you always want to play maximum credits because there is usually a special bonus if you do and win the jackpot. Often the big progressive jackpots are not available unless you are playing maximum credits. It would be a shame to hit it, and then only qualify for a much smaller prize.
